Second thing we want to teach is letter sound correspondence. These are the building the fundamentals to reading, understanding that print in English runs from left to write, that the sounds make phonemes and that phonemes make words.
Next is the print rich classroom. You want to provide access to print with several kinds of materials, including paper and books. You may want to make up silly words in order to make children want to sit and read. One of my favorite web authors named Shahan writes some pretty interesting stuff on literacy and balanced approaches.
Another blog I like to read is Teach Thought. It gives 10 important ways to teach writing.
There once was a teacher named Laura Hume
Who wished to teach reading in her own classroom
She worked real hard and when it got down to it
Projects
were the way to do it
